Haran (Also Called Harran)

Tell Haran – An Ancient City

Tell Haran is located in the fertile Haran Plain, a green and productive area watered by the Balikh River, which flows into the Euphrates River Armageddon and the Euphrates River.

The ancient city of Haran was protected by a large wall about 2.5 miles (4 km) long. The wall had six gates, but today only the Aleppo Gate (on the west side) is still standing.

Haran – Home of Abraham and Jacob

After God called Abraham to leave his home in Ur of the Chaldees, he and his family settled in Haran for many years (Genesis 11:31; Acts 7:2–4).
During his time in Haran, Abraham became wealthy.

When Abraham was 75 years old, God told him to move to the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:5).

Later, Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, ran away from his brother Esau and traveled to Haran (Genesis 27:43; 28:10). He stayed with his uncle Laban, married two of Laban’s daughters, and had many children there Private Balkan Trip.

Nahor – Ancestor and City

Nahor the Man

There are two important men named Nahor in the Bible:

The first Nahor was a descendant of Shem (son of Noah), and the father of Terah, who was Abraham’s father (Genesis 11:22–25; Luke 3:34).

The second Nahor was Abraham’s brother (Genesis 11:26–27; Joshua 24:2).

He married Milcah (Genesis 11:29).

Nahor had 12 sons: some were with Milcah, and others with a woman named Reumah (Genesis 22:20–24).

The sons of Milcah likely became Aramean tribes living north and east of Israel.

The sons of Reumah likely lived further north, near Damascus.

When Abraham wanted a wife for his son Isaac, he sent a servant to “the city of Nahor” (Genesis 24:10) to find one. The servant found Rebekah, Nahor’s granddaughter.

These tribes were connected to Israel, and they worshiped the same God (Genesis 31:53).

Nahor the City

There was also a city called Nahor (Genesis 24:10). It was likely located east of the Balikh River, which would place it in southern Turkey or northern Syria, near but southeast of Haran (Genesis 29:4–5).
